Welcome to Worship
What we believe…
Eugene First United Methodist Church is a Reconciling Congregation. As followers of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, we affirm that all people are created in the image of God, are beloved children of God, and are worthy of God’s grace. In accord with the ministry of John Wesley, we hold to a vision of an inclusive church that welcomes people of diverse faith journeys, beliefs, and opinions in a loving and caring community. All persons of any sexual orientation, gender identity, marital or family status, age, race, ethnicity, mental or physical ability, and economic situation are welcome to attend, join, and participate fully in the life of our faith community as sisters and brothers in Christ.
We are disciples of Jesus Christ, welcoming all, doing justice, transforming the world.
Where we are…
First United Methodist Church is located at 13th and Olive Street, downtown Eugene, Oregon. Click here for a map. There is plenty of free parking. The north main entrance is handicap accessible. Handicap accessible restrooms are located on the first floor. Portable hearing devices are available for worship services.
What to expect…
Songs and celebration with the congregation singing begins at 10 to 10 (9:50 am) on Sunday morning. We have one worship service at 10:00 AM on Sunday. Communion is served during the service on the first Sunday of each month. Education opportunities are at 8:30 am and 11:15 am (September – May).
Greeters will welcome you in the main entry way on the north side of the building (adjacent to the parking lot). They can answer any questions you may have. After worship is an excellent time to greet friends - old and new - and find out what's going on in the life of the church. Donuts and coffee are provided in Fellowship Hall after worship.
As you enter the sanctuary, you will receive a bulletin which describes the order of the service. Weekly services vary slightly in content, but the following is a general description of what you can expect.
*Prelude - The prelude, music provided by the organ or other instruments, gives worshippers an opportunity for private meditation before we begin the worship service. There will be a time for welcoming and community.
*Announcements - Please sign the Friendship Card in your bulletin so we can get to know you.
*Singing God's Praise - We join together to sing praise songs and hymns. While we are singing, you may fill out a prayer card (found in the pew rack) - anything on your heart that you would like to offer up to God during the prayer. You may sign your name on the card, but it is not mandatory.
*Special Music - One of our many talented musicians or choirs will praise God through music.
*Children's Time - Children of all ages are invited to join the pastor in the front of the sanctuary for a special message just for them. If your child is hesitant, feel free to join the group! Children are always welcome during the service. There are worship bags for children in the back of the sanctuary. We also have a wonderful nursery for infants - 4 years from 8:30 - 12:15 on Sundays and during other scheduled events. Following the Children's Time, children ages Kindergarten through 3rd grade are invited to leave the service for Godly Play Time - organized activities and crafts for children during the sermon.
*Greeting - During this time, we stand and greet those around us - a time to meet new people and greet old friends.
*Scripture Reading - You may follow along with the Scripture reading in the pew Bible (found in the pew rack) if you like.
*Message - One of the pastors will deliver a message. Visit our Sermons page to read some of the past sermons.
*Giving our Gifts to God - The ushers will come forward to collect our offering. This is also a good time to fill out and turn in the small Friendship Card found in your bulletin. This helps the church get to know you.
*Celebrating Communion - The first Sunday of each month, we celebrate Holy Communion. Everyone is welcome at the table; it is not a Methodist table, but the Table of the Lord. Children are most welcome! While they may not understand the deep theological meanings, they can share and feel the blessing of being a part of God’s family who love one another and who are deeply loved by Jesus Christ. If you walk down the center aisle, you will receive a piece of bread and then dip it into a common cup (grape juice). On the side aisles, you will receive a piece of bread and a small, individual cup of grape juice. A gluten free option is also available. After you receive your communion, you may kneel at the front rail for a moment of silent reflection and prayer or return to your seat.
*Baptism - Please contact the church office or one of our pastors.
*Sunday School - We have several Sunday School classes during the school year for Children, Youth, Young Adults and Adults. All are welcome. Please call to see what is happening this week.
